Solving a problem depends on how you approach it. Sometimes, all it takes is a single step; in other instances, the fix calls for a more holistic process. Dehydration sits firmly in the latter category.

Most people think hydration is a by-product of drinking enough water; however, managing dehydration goes well beyond just quenching thirst. It involves anticipating, managing and optimising the body’s needs before performance is affected.

No one knows that better than Body Armour. By applying sports-science principles to the mining sector, the company equips workers with the tools, knowledge and strategies to treat dehydration effectively.

At the core of Body Armour’s offering is its unique three-tiered approach that blends education, hydration solutions and technology – with the trio working together to keep miners safe.

Perhaps the most significant of the three is education.

Workers who understand how sleep, hydration, heat and fatigue affect performance are more likely to adopt safer behaviours, from pre-shift routines to recovery habits.

This foundation sets the stage for evidence-based strategies that target real-world mining stressors. It begins with grounding workers in simple physiological truths – the basic building blocks of how the body performs on mine sites – while clearing up common misconceptions along the way:

“If you’re thirsty, just drink more water.”

Thirst is a delayed signal; by the time it appears, dehydration is already underway. And without electrolytes, the body cannot retain water effectively, no matter how much is consumed.

“Heat stress only matters when temperatures are extreme.”

Cognitive slowdown, reduced reaction time and coordination issues can occur even on moderate days. Core temperature, not ambient weather alone, determines risk.

“Sugar gives you the energy you need in the heat.”

High-sugar products cause spikes and crashes, contribute to fatigue and can increase gastrointestinal strain, the opposite of what’s needed to stay sharp and safe.

“Hydration is just about water.”

It’s not. Electrolytes make hydration work. They drive muscle contraction, nerve signalling and fluid absorption. Without sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium, workers lose strength, focus and reaction speed far sooner.

For Body Armour, it’s the Human Factor Toolbox, which, according to the company, “changes the game”.

“It’s more than a product, it’s about providing operations boots-on-the-ground support,” Body Armour said.

The Human Factor Toolbox is essentially a series of tailored on-site sessions hosted by Body Armour to educate workers on how their body works under pressure.

The program emphasises that poor focus, fatigue, slower reaction times, and energy crashes are all human issues – not personal failings or procedural limitations.

Through practical, easy-to-follow modules, Body Armour’s toolbox talks show that these outcomes are predictable responses to physical and mental strain.

In ‘Hydration and Heat Stress’, workers learn how fluid and electrolyte balance affects energy, coordination, and muscle function, and how to prevent dehydration before it becomes a risk; ‘Sleep, Fatigue and Recovery’ covers how rest affects focus, decision-making and physical performance, with tips for improving sleep quality and managing fatigue; ‘Nutrition and Performance’ explains how targeted nutrition supports energy, recovery and overall resilience on long, physically demanding shifts.

Sessions are primarily delivered in-person, so workers can ask questions and take part in discussions. But they can be run online if needed.

Content can also be recorded, giving sites a library of resources for ongoing reference.

These sessions are also designed to fit into existing safety campaigns and seasonal heat-management plans, so workers hear the same messages consistently throughout the year.

“This isn’t a wellness tick-box. It’s a practical safety strategy that creates lasting behavioural change,” Body Armour said.

“Knowledge is the key to driving change. With a better understanding of how the body works, we tend to make better choices.”

At its heart, Body Armour’s mission is simple: equip workers with the knowledge and tools to protect their most important asset, their own body.
