Body Armour’s range of refreshing electrolytes attracted a huge crowd at this year’s Workplace Health and Safety Show — with attendees lining up for a taste at the company’s stall.
Out of the thousands that packed out the Melbourne Convention Centre over two days in May, many visitors also had the opportunity to learn more about Body Armour’s one-of-their-kind products from the company’s director Toni McQuinn.
With an impressive assortment of hydration supplements on display at the show, people were able to try the concoctions and vote for their favourite flavours.
And while the supplements packed a tasteful punch, there’s another key ingredient behind their success in the mining industry.
“Our biggest point of difference from our competitors is that we don’t use any form of artificial colours or sweeteners — there’s no chemicals at all,” McQuinn told Safe To Work.
“We don’t put in any sugar or carbs, instead we use thaumatin which comes from a plant and that adds that natural sweetness.
“When we look at our electrolytes, we’ve applied the same methodology as we do in sports nutrition so we include not just potassium and sodium but also calcium and magnesium which is great for muscle recovery.”
According to McQuinn, these drinks and combination of minerals are essential for workers on mine sites given the nature of their work.
“In the mining world heat, stress, dehydration, fatigue and low energy are all important considerations,” he said.
“Individuals are working 10-12 hour shifts that typically have really high sweat-rates and with the kind of physical work they do, they lose a lot of essential minerals which are required for optimal movement.
“That is where these solutions come into play.”
McQuinn highlighted another sought after Body Armour product, one that helps workers switch off after a long strenuous shift.
“We have a sleep solution which is probably our most popular solution for people looking to avoid something chemical,” he said.
“Our solutions use nine active ingredients that are like natural [relaxants].
“They’re really popular with miners.”
