Isaac Downs back on track following safety shutdown

Stanmore Resources’ Isaac Downs coal mine in Queensland’s Bowen Basin moved swiftly to make sure its operations were compliant last week, following a brief suspension.

On April 17, Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) issued a directive under Section 55 of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act, citing non-compliance with requirements for a clearly defined management structure.

Within 24 hours, EPSA Pacific – the mine’s contract operator – submitted an updated structure that met RSHQ’s standards, allowing production to resume promptly the following morning.

EPSA, a Spanish mining services provider, operates the mine under a five-year, $564 million contract with Stanmore Resources.

The Isaac Downs operation, employing approximately 300 workers, is a key part of the Isaac Plains complex and contributes between one and four million tonnes of metallurgical coal annually.

Stanmore Resources reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to workplace safety, highlighting its collaboration with EPSA to further strengthen the site’s safety and health management system.

The swift resolution underscores the sector’s adaptability and dedication to maintaining safe operations in alignment with Queensland’s rigorous regulatory framework.

This proactive response stands as a strong example of how the mining industry can address compliance concerns efficiently while continuing to prioritise worker safety. It also reflects the effectiveness of Queensland’s regulatory system in fostering a culture of safety-first practices across the resources sector.

The Isaac Downs site remains a cornerstone of regional employment and economic activity, with a projected 16-year mine life and an estimated total coal output of 35 million tonnes.
