Levelling the playing field at Australian mines

Australian women working in traditionally male-dominated industries such as mining are set to benefit from a $16.4 million Federal grant aimed at making workplaces more equitable.

The funds have been allocated as part of the Advancing Gender Equality in Gender Segregated Industries program, which includes 11 new projects led by peak organisations representing employers and workers.

One of those programs is the WOMEN in MINING – Advancing Gender Equality in the Northern Territory initiative, led by the NT Trades and Labour Council, in partnership with the Australian Council Of Trade Unions.

Primarily a research and development project, WOMEN in MINING aims to foster inclusive workplace practices and gender-responsive work health and safety training at NT mine sites.

It will do this by developing and implementing targeted initiatives that improve workplace inclusivity, flexibility, and retention of female employees.

This project aligns with the Australian Government’s Working for Women initiative, which identifies industry and occupational segregation as a barrier to women’s economic equality and security.

“Leaving women’s talent on the shelf is just not an option when it comes to closing the gender pay gap and making sure we have the skills we need for a Future Made in Australia – but we can’t expect women to turn up and thrive in workplaces that are not welcoming, suitable or safe,” Federal Minister for Women Katy Gallagher said.

“That’s why it’s so important for employers, industry groups, unions and government to work together to make practical changes that will not only support women, but benefit entire industries.”

Federal Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations Murray Watt said workforce gender segregation contributes to the gender pay gap and increases the risk of workforce shortages.

“It is vital workplaces are flexible and inclusive, and that they provide safe and dignified facilities and amenities for women and working parents,” Watt said.

“Women deserve to be safe and valued at work, so we’re helping to ensure that industries that traditionally have a gender imbalance are given support to make their workplaces fair and welcoming for all.”
