Mining graders and fire risks: Why suppression systems are essential

Mining graders play a crucial role in site operations, ensuring safe and efficient road conditions. However, their high-horsepower engines, continuous operation, and exposure to flammable materials make them vulnerable to fire risks.

Without a reliable fire suppression system, a minor incident can escalate into a major catastrophe – posing a threat to both equipment and operator safety.

The challenge: Compliant fire protection on a tight deadline

When three graders were scheduled for transport to a Brisbane mine site, they needed to be equipped with a fire suppression system compliant with AS5062:2016 before deployment.

The timeframe was tight-installation had to be completed quickly, requiring a full risk assessment, system installation, and compliance certification before the graders could be released for operation.

The solution: MusterFire’s rapid response

To meet the stringent safety and compliance requirements, a Muster foam-based fire suppression system was installed. Designed to combat fires fuelled by liquid hydrocarbons, the system offers instant detection and suppression – critical for environments where fuel, oil, and hydraulic systems are present.

The suppression system was supplied by MusterFire International and installed by Amet Industries, a Brisbane-based distributor specialising in fire suppression solutions.

System Components:

  • 66L suppression cylinder for effective fire containment
  • F3 foam concentrate for rapid cooling and fuel separation
  • Linear heat detection system for early fire detection
  • Muster alarm panel for real-time monitoring
  • Loss of pressure (LOP) push-button actuator for immediate manual activation

A team of two experienced technicians completed the entire installation in a 15-hour night shift, ensuring the project was delivered on time without operational delays.

The outcome: Safety, compliance and efficiency

Following the risk assessment and system validation, all three graders were certified as AS5062:2016 compliant and safely delivered to the mine site – equipped with a robust fire suppression solution that ensures operator protection and asset security.

In the mining industry, where equipment downtime equals lost productivity, fire suppression isn’t just about safety – it’s about operational continuity. MusterFire International delivers tailored solutions that help mining companies stay compliant, protected, and prepared.
