MusterFire redefines fire safety underground

In the confined, high-risk world of underground mining, MusterFire has redefined equipment safety with a solution built precisely for the job.

In underground mining environments, there’s little room for error. Especially when it comes to equipment. The tight confines require machinery to navigate spaces so limited that every centimetre counts.

Designed specifically to thrive in those exact challenging conditions, the Mecalac Revotruck 6 operates like an underground acrobat.

Its standout feature is a 270° hydraulic rotating cab, granting operators exceptional manoeuvrability beneath conveyor belts and through restrictive tunnels.

Yet, this compact design, paired with a powerful diesel engine, brings serious fire risks that call for a bespoke and robust safety solution.

To devise a perfect fit, Mecalac partnered with an Australian-owned business renowned for the superior quality of its products – MusterFire.

MusterFire responded with a fire suppression system tailored specifically to the Revotruck 6’s unique demands. Traditional fire suppression systems rely on vertical cylinders, often bulky and ill-suited to the cramped spaces this dumper navigates. MusterFire’s answer came in the form of its LayFlat Cylinder, a horizontally oriented solution featuring slim units engineered to fit where others cannot. These cylinders house a foam-based suppression agent, chosen for its effectiveness in diesel-powered machinery. The design wasn’t simply about fitting components into limited space, but about ensuring the entire system worked in harmony with the Revotruck’s unique mechanics.

Inside the cab, the Muster Indicator Panel provides operators with real-time updates on the system’s  status. Its clear, unobtrusive display keeps safety information accessible without drawing attention away from their work. Even the placement of the discharge nozzles, as well as the control system was considered carefully, ensuring nothing obstructs the cab’s full rotation, nor does it encroach on operator comfort.

It also guaranteed accessibility for servicing was maintained, recognising that ongoing maintenance is essential for lasting safety. Additionally, all elements of the MusterFire system aligned with AS5062 standards. When it came time to install, the process was equally seamless. The integration left the Revotruck’s performance untouched, allowing operators to continue their work with the added confidence of reliable and unobtrusive fire protection.

Beyond the technology, the human element remained front and centre with the Mecalac team highlighting the care taken by MusterFire in positioning components and its dependable fail-safe operation. That feedback speaks to MusterFire’s understanding of the environments and people who rely on its equipment every day. The MusterFire system goes further than immediate protection. Its intelligent sensors monitor system integrity around the clock, delivering alerts and diagnostic information to both operators and technicians.

The Muster LayFlat Cylinder, symbolic of the company’s approach, illustrates how innovation can arise simply from listening to real-world challenges. For the Mecalac Revotruck 6, this means fire safety moves with the machine. Operators working beneath the surface can now focus on their vital tasks, reassured that protection is always at hand without compromising the freedom of movement that makes this dumper exceptional. In a setting surrounded by numerous constraints and a constant need for safety, this collaboration sets a new standard.

It serves as a reminder that despite its limited space, underground mines  have plenty of room for bespoke innovation.
