PAPR: The future of respiratory compliance

As new respiratory exposure limits come into effect later this year, safety managers are turning their attention to compliance-friendly equipment.

Traditional tight fitting respirators highlight the limitations of older approaches: they require clean shaven policies, strict adherence to fit checks, and formal fit testing for every worker.

SafeWork mandates that tight fitting PPE, such as disposable P2/N95 masks or reusable half and full face respirators, must be individually fit tested before use, annually, and whenever a new model is introduced.

These requirements intensify under silica related regulations, which also demand pre-use, annual and model change fit testing as part of compliance.

PAPRs represent a practical step forward in this landscape. Unlike tight fitting respirators, loose fitting PAPR hoods and helmets do not require fit testing, because they rely on positive pressure airflow rather than a facial seal. PAPRs are powered systems that deliver filtered air via a hose into a hood, helmet, or loose fitting facepiece, eliminating seal related requirements entirely.

This shift also arrives at a time of major regulatory change. Safe Work Australia has confirmed that Workplace Exposure Limits (WEL) will replace the long standing Workplace Exposure Standards (WES) from December 1, 2026. Unlike the previous terminology, WELs represent strict limits that must not be exceeded, aligning Australia with international safety language. Many contaminants relevant to mining and drilling – including respirable crystalline silica and various fumes and gases – are having their limits reduced, raising the bar for acceptable protection.

It is also worth noting that workplaces must continue to comply with existing WES requirements throughout the transition period until full adoption of WELs.

In this tightening regulatory environment, PAPRs deliver a powerful combination: higher and more consistent protection, fewer administrative burdens, and improved ease of adoption. This positions them directly at the intersection of compliance, innovation and practical worksite realities.
