QMEA teaches students the Pit to Port process

The Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) has helped 60 year seven students to develop their mathematics, logistics, communication and teamwork skills with its Pit to Port program.

It is a partnership between the QRC and the Queensland Government under the Gateway to Industry schools program, which encompasses 75 schools across the state.

Conoco Phillips Australia, Boyne Smelter and Gladstone Ports Corporation trained students on workplace health and safety, fleet management and port and harbour operation.

“By working in teams, the students will better understand the export business through the supply chain process,” Queensland Resources Council (QRC) policy director skills, education and training Katrina-Lee Jones said.

“Hearing firsthand about different career options and how to get onto those pathways is invaluable for students who are starting to think about the direction their senior studies will take.

Students from Toolooa, Tannum Sands and Gladstone state high schools and Chanel College participated in this program.

The partnership aims to educate young people about careers within the resources industry and the sector’s role in Queensland’s economy.

The Queensland resources industry provides one in every five dollars in the Queensland economy, sustains one in every seven Queensland jobs and supports more than 14,400 Queensland businesses and community organisations.

This comes from 0.1 per cent of the state’s land mass, according to the QMEA.
