Mine workers are being urged to remain focused and manage fatigue after a light vehicle collided with a stationary haul truck on a mine decline.
According to the NSW Resources Regulator, the haul truck was travelling down the decline when its operator received a call from another truck travelling up the same route.
The haul truck stopped and intended to reverse out of the way of the oncoming vehicle. However, before doing so, the operator noticed a light vehicle travelling down the decline behind him. The truck remained stationary while the operator waited to see where the light vehicle was heading.
The regulator said the light vehicle did not slow down and collided with the haul truck’s position four tyre. The light vehicle operator sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for scans and treatment.
In its industry recommendations, the regulator said inattention and distraction while driving can have “fatal consequences”.
“Drivers should remain focused on the task at hand and not be distracted while driving,” the regulator said.
This includes staying alert, being aware of surroundings, and maintaining control of the plant and machinery being operated.
The safety body also pointed to the importance of fatigue management, noting that workers should arrive at work rested and ready for a full shift, and report fatigue-related events as they occur.
