Thermo Fisher makes testing easier than ever before

Thermo Fisher Scientific understands that keeping mining sites safe means providing drug testing that’s simple, reliable and fits naturally into day-to-day operations.

Effective drug testing helps protect workers and build trust in teams. Thermo Fisher Scientific’s point-of-care testing solutions are designed to deliver both, ensuring safety without unnecessary complexity.

Traditional drug testing methods, while effective in controlled settings, can be difficult to implement on mining sites.

Long turnaround times, infrastructure constraints, and the need for specialist facilities make them impractical for remote operations.

To address these challenges, Thermo Fisher developed the MicroScreen range – a suite of high-quality, field-ready drug testing tools tailored for the demands of mining and independently validated to strict Australian standards.

The MicroScreen Oral Fluid Drug Test, for example, only requires a small saliva sample and delivers fast, accurate results without needing a special collection space. It’s suited to daily screening in remote locations, particularly when workers need to be cleared before entering operational zones. The process is non-invasive, straightforward and easy to administer, so safety checks can be carried out without disrupting the flow of work.

Where urine testing is required, Thermo Fisher offers solutions that provide additional layers of control and security. The MicroScreen 2 and 2 Plus devices are designed to reduce the risk of tampering and built-in adulteration checks. Whereas the MicroScreen Split model includes a key-controlled activation feature, giving collectors greater oversight and ensuring the testing process is consistent and secure.

According to Thermo Fisher, choosing between oral fluid and urine testing depends on purpose. Oral fluid testing detects more recent drug use, making it best for assessing immediate impairment; while urine testing provides a longer detection window, suitable for pre-employment or broader health monitoring.

In the context of remote mining, oral fluid testing offers clear advantages. It doesn’t rely on access to bathrooms or private facilities, and because the collection process can be observed directly, there’s less opportunity for manipulation. For operations where time, accuracy and minimal disruption are critical, this level of flexibility can make a substantial difference.

Additionally, testing with certified devices on-site means only non-negative results are sent for further lab analysis, helping reduce unnecessary delays and avoid false positives. This allows teams to respond faster and keep work moving without compromising safety.

Many mining companies now use Thermo Fisher’s testing solutions as part of everyday operations. From routine checks to post-incident testing, drug screening has become embedded in how crews look out for one another and uphold safety on site.

The drug screening market is constantly evolving. Urine was historically the dominant format; however, over the past five years the market has adopted oral fluid to the point it exceeds urine testing in some industries. This is why, for Thermo Fisher, it is important to stay ahead of the curve. The newest development is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital tools to assist in the drug collection, reporting or interpretation of results.

Ultimately, Thermo Fisher aims to equip mining companies with tools that meet real-world challenges and evolve alongside future demands. Whether through exploring digital tools that automate reporting, maintain chain-of-custody records, mobile apps or AI-assisted platforms, the goal is to make drug testing more seamless, efficient and fully aligned with the way mining sites operate.
