Calls for strengthened communications on site

underground mine incident

The New South Wales regulator has said procedure is key after after a worker was hit by a loader at an underground metalliferous mine.

The worker was on foot in a decline when a loader that travelled into the area.

The incident occurred when a light vehicle stopped in front of vent doors towards the bottom of a decline. The passenger got out and went to the rear of the light vehicle to get equipment.

The vehicle driver advised that a loader was coming down the decline and proceeded to go through the vent doors.

The loader operator was unaware of the worker on foot and discovered the incident only after parking up.

The incident is currently under investigation by the NSW Resources Regulator.

Earlier this month, A light vehicle driver narrowly avoided disaster when an integrated tool carrier (ITC) reversed into the driver-side door in another underground metals mine in NSW.

After an investigation, the state regulator called for strengthened communications on site, particularly when heavy mining equipment is involved.

“Plant operators are reminded that they must establish positive communications before entering the work area of other mobile plants,” the NSW Resources Regulator said.

“Workers must check the area behind their machines before reversing. Workers should use all aids such as mirrors, cameras and awareness systems that are fitted.”

The regulator recently carried out a targeted awareness campaign focused on the risk of collisions involving mining equipment.

Fundamental practices such as positive communication, adherence to site traffic rules and procedures, driving to the conditions and operator hazard awareness are repeatedly identified through the Regulator’s investigations as contributing factors to incidents.
